Note: Francesco Musacchia was born Nov 15, 1852 in the village of Contessa Entellina, Sicily, Italy. His father was Andrea Musacchia and his mother Caterina LALA. Frank (Francesco) had 2 brothers - Guiseppe (Joseph) who was reported to have stayed in Italy to be a priest and Giovanni (Jack) who came to America first and settled on a farm in Sacramento with his wife Lena and their 4 children HENRY, Katie, Annie and Laura. Frank (Francesco) also had 2 sisters named Anna AND Mamie. ? if they stayed in Italy but Anna supposedly took care of the family estate when their father ANDREA died . Giovanni (Jack) made a visit back to Italy at that time. The family home still stands at No.65 Via Mrea in the town of Contessa Entellina in Sicily - a town about 86 kil from Palermo. The family owned some large acreage outside of Contessa in a place called Bagnatelli and they were reported to have had a flour mill around there too. Another family source reported the mill being 9 miles outside of Roma....it has not been verified.The writer visited Contessa in July of 83 and met a cousin, Gaspare' Musacchia whose great grandfather GIOCCHINA MUsaachia was a brother to Andrea. Gaspare owns a pharmacy on 73 Via Morea ...the same street as the family home of Franchesco's parents. Frank (Francesco) was thought to be of Italian descent but found out that the Musacchias were deacendants of a colony of early Albanians who fled their homeland of Albania to escape religious persecution by the Turks who invaded their country in the 15th century. The Catholic Albanians left their homeland rather than convert to the Moslem religeon. They were known as the Arberesh...also Italo-Albanians. They spoke a language called Arberisht ...not the same as Italian.....a distinct language preserved 500 years in a foreign land. To the Italians they were known as the "GHEGHI" or "Ghe-Ghe". The Musacchias attended the Greek Church in Contessa. It is not the GReek Orthodox Church but Bysantine (an Eastern or Latin Greek Church) and is under the rule of the Pope. We saw several Musacchias listed on the church roster as priests and church officials.Frank (Francesco) married Vincenza (Virginia) Roccaforte in the Greek Church (name of the church is St. Sophia) in Contessa on Nov 13, 1886. He was 34 years old and she was 21. They left Italy shortly after their marriage and came to American. Port of entry was Ellis Island. They moved to New Orleans, Louisanna and settled there and opened a grocery store. Their second child, HENRY JOSEPH was born there on Oct 24, 1888. Their first child also named Henry died as an infant in New York. From New Orleans they moved to Oakland CA where they had a grocery store and lived at 7th and Broadway. They had 2 daughters there (my mother ) Caterina born Sept 19,1892 and Mayme Frances June 4, 1894. From Oakland they moved to Sacramento and lived on D Street and later moved to a place on 29th and W Streets where the rest of their children were born. They later built a home at 2708 O Street until Franks death on Dec 20, 1920. The family attended St Frances Church located on the corner of 26gth and K (it stills stands today). All the children went to and graduated from the Catholic School there.Frank was in the produce business, mostly fruit. He had a wineryuntil prohibition. Half of the property on O street (back half) contained buildings and equipment for distilling wine.
