Liuzza, Theodora Lucille (b. 11 Apr 1924, d. 27 Jun 1992)
Note: Sciacca - Theodora 'Teddy' Sciacca, president of the board of governors of Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre and a playwright, lyricist and composer, died Friday of cancer at her French Quarter home. She was 66. Mrs. Sciacca was born in New Orleans into a newspaper family. Her father, Ted Liuzza, was a longtime amusements writer for the old New Orleans Item. She graduated from Loyola University with a degree in journalism and worked as a reporter for United Press International and as a script writer and continuity director for WWL radio and television. While editor of the Shell Oil Company's in-house magazine, she met and married her husband, Frank H. Sciacca. A lifelong resident of the French Quarter and a parishioner of St. Louis Cathedral, Mrs. Sciacca titled her first songwriting effort 'The Bells of St. Louis. ' It was performed at the church in 1969 and on radio by Leon Kelner and the Blue Room Orchestra. Her first musical comedy, 'How to Stay Young Forever, ' was staged at Le Petit Theatre's main stage in 1984. It was followed by 'Make Mine Bourbon' in 1987 and 'The Golden Touch' in 1990, also produced at Le Petit. Mrs. Sciacca wrote the book, music and lyrics for these productions. An active volunteer, she chaired fund-raisers for St. Louis Cathedral, Patio Planters, the Le Petit board and the French Quarter Parents Club. At the time of her death, Mrs. Sciacca was working on a fourth play, 'Late Bloomers, ' as well as a revival of 'Make Mine Bourbon, ' starring Ed Nelson and her daughter, Sandy Shilstone, which is being staged July 23-26 at the St. Peter Street playhouse as a fund-raiser for Le Petit. Its first rehearsal went on as scheduled Saturday afternoon at the theater. 'Her contributions to Le Petit were immeasurable, ' said Gayle Batt, a past president of the theater's board. 'She was a theater member for many years, publicist for the women's guild and an extremely active board member, a harmonizing spirit on the board. In addition, she made a creative contribution to the theater as a playwright. ' 'She has been an invaluable, tireless, devoted theater worker, ' said Emmett J. Johnson, chairman of Le Petit's board. 'This past year, she had the responsibility of presiding over the board, and doing all of the theater's publicity and marketing. Anything anyone asked her to do for the theater, she'd do. Her parents had brought her to Le Petit, and she brought her children and grandchildren to the theater. ' Survivors include her husband, Frank H. Sciacca; two sons, Frank R. 'Champ' Sciacca and Richard S. Sciacca; a daughter, Sandy Shilstone; her father, Ted Liuzza; a brother, Ray Liuzza; and two grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be said Monday at 11 a. m. at Tharp-Sontheimer-Laudumiey Funeral Home, 1225 N. Rampart Street. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. 06-28-1992 Times Picayune
