Cardinale, Dominick or Domenico (b. 16 Oct 1875, d. 27 Aug 1947)
Note: Domenico Cardinale came to the US into the port of New York on 29 Oct, 1906 on the ship The CRETIC. He is going to meet a cousin Vincenzo Passaro in Brooklyn. He is 5'1" tall of medium build with brown eyes and brown hair. His profession is a barber.

Dominick is in the 1920 US census of New York, Kings, Brooklyn, ED 798, Sheet 20 B. With him is his wife Vincenza, and children; James, Jennie, Nellie, Ester and Linda. Dominick came to the US in 1906, and Vincenza in 1911. Dominick has his own barber shop.
Dominick is in the 1930 US census of New York, Kings, Brooklyn, Ward 15, ED 1549, Sheet 16A. They are living at 274 Kingsland Avenue. With him is his wife Vincenza and children; Nellie, Esther, Linda and Libia. He is a barber shop owner.
Domenico Cardinale was born October 16, 1875 in the very small mountain town of Contessa Entellina, province of Palermo, Sicily, Italy. He was the child of Vincenzo Cardinale and Giovanna Sciambra. Domenico's father, Vincenzo Cardinale, had worked as a pilot on a ferry boat sailing across the Straits of Messina. (a) Regarding Domenico's father: he had been married four times and buried all four wives. Many years after Domenico emigrated, his father had written to Domenico in the United States asking for money to get married for a fifth time. Domenico had refused to send the money saying he'd been married enough times. Domenico's father, Vincenzo, died a year later at the age of 95. Domenico also had two half-sisters whose names are unknown and lost to us. One half-sister was believed to have lived in NJ, while the other supposedly lived in Louisiana or Alabama (b).

Domenico Cardinale married Vincenza Segreto, born April 7, 1877, the daughter of Salvatore Segreto and Nicolina Maniscalco. At the time of their marriage, Domenico was about 20+/- years old and Vincenza was approximately 17 years old.(c) The wedding of Domenico and Vincenza was well attended by everyone in their village, including the Mayor.(b) Domenico and Vincenza would eventually have 10 children, of whom only 6 lived on to adulthood. The three eldest children, Vincenzo, Napoleone, and Giovanna, were born in Contessa Entellina. The remaining children were born in NYC. (See notes of Vincenza Segreto)

ÙSLife in Contessa Entellina was hard. There was much poverty. The family lived in a very small mountain home (if you can call it a home) which had only a hard dirt floor, very rustic. Domenico was the town barber and medicine man, of sorts. He shaved and cut the hair of everyone in the village including the priests and the Mayor. As the local medicine man, he administered folk remedies such as mustard plasters and hot pyrex cups to relieve congestion, as well as performing very minor surgeries.[When people were sick with Flu or lung problems, he would administer small pyrex cups. He would dip them only to the rim in a saucer of alcohol, light it up, quickly blow out the flame then place on the chest. This would clear the chest and lungs of anything that was there.ÙT [Linda remembers as children her father would do the same for his children, but the doctors here in America sort of frowned on this method. In fact, she thinks it was outlawed. (b, a)]

In October of 1906, Domenico Cardinale left his family and home and set out for America from the port of Palermo, on the ship the S.S.CRETIC, in search of a better life for his family. He arrived at the port of NY on October 29, 1906. His record states he was going to meet a cousin Vincenzo Passaro in Brooklyn. Domenico is 5'1" tall of medium build with brown eyes and hair. He gives his profession as barber.
He established a residence and set out to work as a barber. Five years later, after saving enough money for their passage tickets, his wife Vincenza Segreto, along with their oldest son Vincenzo and daughter Giovanna, sailed from Palermo to NYC on the steamship S.S. Duca Degli Abruzzi. They arrived in NYC on Feb. 14, 1911. (Data from Passenger & Immigration Lists, National Archives)

Domenico bought a barber shop at 112 Wythe Avenue in Brooklyn. The family lived behind the shop.
On February 7, 1918, Domenico and his family became Naturalized citizens of the United States. The following people were listed on the Certificate of Naturalization: Domenico at age 42 yrs old, Vincenza 39 yrs old, Vincenzo 19 yrs old, Napoleone 18 yrs old, Giovanna 15 yrs old, Libia 4 yrs old, Cornelia 3 yrs old, Trieste 1 yr old. [At some later point in time, several of the children Americanized their names to James Vincent, Charlie, Jean, Nellie and Esther.]

Between October 1918 and June 1919, two children, Libia and Charlie (Napoleone), had died. Libia due to the 1918 influenza epidemic and Charlie from internal bleeding from unknowingly eating chocolates containing glass.

By January 13th 1920, the family had moved to 140 North Eleventh Street in Brooklyn, NY. This is the address where they were found at the time of the 1920 Census. Listed with him are his wife, Vincenza, and children: James, Jennie, Nellie, Ester and Linda. [1920 US Census of New York, Kings Co., Brooklyn, ED 798, Sheet 20B]. It is unclear whether Domenico retained the barber shop at 112 Wythe Ave. and just rented out the apartments or if he sold the building. It is known that in the 1920 census his occupation was still as a barber, and that he worked on his own account.
Dominick is in the 1930 US Census of New York, Kings Co., Brooklyn, Ward 15, ED 1549, Sheet 16A. The family is living at 274 Kingsland Avenue. With him are his wife, Vincenza and children: Nellie, Esther, Linda and Libia. He is a barber shop owner.

In the 1930's - 1940's, he is remembered by Dan Cardinale as constantly having a bottle of milk in one hand and a cane in the other and that he had quite a "potbelly". (d)

Domenico Cardinale was hospitalized at Kings County Hospital on August 20, 1947 and died 7 days later on August 27, 1947 of Natural Causes, while an inpatient at the hospital. He was buried on August 30, 1947 in St. John's Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens Co., NY (section 12).
Also buried in this plot are daughter Libia (1913 - 1918) and son Charlie (1900 - 1919). His wife Vincenza was later interred in this plot when she passed on in 1953.
