Schilleci, Edward C. (b. 20 Feb 1913, d. 27 Mar 1998)
Note: Schilleci - Edward C. Schilleci, Slidell's first police chief until he was ousted in a 1976 recall election, died Friday at NorthShore Regional Medical Center. He was 85. Mr. Schilleci was born in New Orleans and lived in Slidell for the past 50 years. He was city marshal in Slidell before becoming police chief in 1958. In 1975 he was at the center of allegations of wiretapping in a narcotics case and other crimes, that led to an attempted takeover of his office by several of his own officers. The episode pitted Mr. Schilleci against the mayor and City Council of Slidell and led to his recall by an almost 2-1 margin. Mr. Schilleci always denied the charges against him and blamed them on members of a police union he said wanted to get him out of office because he would not give in to their demands. During and after the time he was police chief, he also operated a private security firm in Slidell. Mr. Schilleci was a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, National Association of Chiefs of Police, Louisiana Peace Officers Association and American Legion Post No. 0401. He was in the Merchant Marine during World War II. Survivors include two sons, J.E. Bowen of Baton Rouge and Scott Bowen of Austin, Texas; three daughters, Sandie S. Knowles, Pamela S. Ricca and Thana C. Schilleci; a sister, Philomina S. Malinowski; and five grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 1 p.m. at Honaker Funeral Home, 1751 Gause Blvd. West, Slidell.
