Note: "The roots of the Cuccia name can be traced back to Sicily to around the year 1700. Those roots spread to America from Contessa Entellina, Sicily, in 1883 with the arrival of NicoloÙu Cuccia and his wife Calogera (Valenti) Cuccia and their first born child, Giuseppe, aboard the SS Prinz George. Unfortunately, the child died December 27, 1883, while the ship was at anchor in the New York Harbor. He was 11 months old. The Prinz George arrived in New Orleans January 19,1883.
Nicolo Cuccia was born in Contessa Entellina on November 18, 1845, the 5th of 13 children. He had 10 brothers and 2 sisters. His parents were Giuseppe Cuccia and Maria (Graffato) Cuccia. NicoloÙu married Calogera Valenti on April 23, 1882. He was 37, and she was 17. Calogera was the youngest of 5 children. She had 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Her parents were Giuseppi Valenti and Rosaria Mansullo.
Also on the Prinz George were Nicolo's older brother Vincenzo Cuccia, 45, his wife Cristina (Borrello) Cuccia, 44, and their son, Vincenti Charles Cuccia, 9.
NicoloÙu and Calogera had 8 children, 5 girls and 3 boys.
Maria (referred to as MaryÙT) was the first born in America on March 17, 1885. She married W. Mitchell, had 3 sons, Phillip, Sam, and Nick, and eventually moved to Houston, Texas. Phillip married ,Lizzie Livermore. They had a daughter, Shirley, and 2 sons, Phillip and Daniel. Sam married Violet. They had 3 sons. Nick married and divorced, and had no children.
The second child was Rosaria (referred to as ÙSSaraÙT), born December 20, 1887. She married Henry Yost, a fireman, and had 2 daughters, Carmelite and Katie. The girls never married.
The third child was Antonina (referred to as ÙSNitchieÙT), born March 20, 1889. She married Eugene Bellande. They had 2 children, Louise and Joseph. Louise married Eddie Singer. They had no children. Joseph (referred to as ÙSBrotherÙT) married Thelma Chauvin of Chauvin, Louisiana. They had 3 daughters, Patricia, Jean, and Rae Ann.
The fourth child was Giuseppe (referred to as ÙSJoeÙT), a policeman, born August 27, 1890. He married Sadie Harrison. They had 4 daughters, Leah, who died shortly after birth, Lois, Azilda, and Coleen, and 2 sons, Francis and Joseph.
The fifth child was Lena, born February 10, 1895. She died February 21, 1911 of spinal meningitis. She had just had her 16th birthday.
The sixth child was Ciscimo (?), later called ÙSJakeÙT, born March 17, 1897, He married Annie Wagner. They had 3 daughters, Carolyn, Joyce, and Lorraine, and 3 sons, (ÙSLittleÙT) Jake, Ray, and Jay.
The seventh child was Carmela, later called ÙSCarmeliteÙT, born January 15, 1899. She married William Stapleton from New York. They had a daughter, Patricia, and a son, Michael. William also had a son, Robert, from a previous marriage.
The eighth child was Frank, born 1903. Frank did not marry. He died August 22, 1934, with a brain tumor that resulted from injuries he sustained in a car accident. He was 31.
NicoloÙu died August 13, 1905 at age 58. He was buried in Cypress Grove No.2 Cemetery in New Orleans. In the early 1930s, construction began on Canal Boulevard, which required the relocation of those gravesites. There is no family record or remembrance of whether his grave was relocated or if it is under the Canal Boulevard roadbed.
Calogera died April 20, 1924 at age 59. She is buried in a family plot in Greenwood Cemetery in New Orleans. The birth and death dates are incorrectly shown as ÙS1857Ùv1924ÙT, instead of ÙS1865Ùv1924ÙT, and she is listed as ÙSCarolynÙT Cuccia. During her lifetime she was referred to as ÙSCarolineÙT or ÙSCarmelaÙT.
In that same family plot are Lena Cuccia, Leah Cuccia, a daughter of Joseph and Sadie Cuccia who died as an infant, and William and Emily Harrison, parents of Sadie Cuccia, JoeÙus wife. Also in that plot, though not mentioned on the headstone is Frank Cuccia." by Michael Stapleton
