Calandrino, Giuseppe (b. ABT 1857, d. DEAD)
Note: Dear Leita - Thank you so much for taking the time to write and offer help with my family. I got a little more info. from my mom. My father, Dr. Joe Mitchell, died 12/23/97 at 88, and most of his relatives are gone, as well (his sister Eleanora died in Tampa, age 102, last summer). Anyway, my grandmother was Domenica Schiro, from Contessa E. She married an architect named Lamanna and had five daughters. Her sister, Eleanora Schiro married "Joe Mitchell Sr." in New Orleans. She died and Joe brought the body back to Contessa for burial. By that time, Domenica's husband had died. As was custom, so I understand, she later married Joe. My dad was born of that union. They moved to America when dad was a toddler, settling in New Orleans. My dad's cousin, Eleanora's son, Victor Schiro, was mayor of New Orleans at one time. Dad's family was in the grocery business - they owned United Fruit Line. Also had something to do with the Jax brewery. Anyway - they later moved to Houston. Some of his sisters settled in Tampa. Dad went to SMU, and Tulane Medical School, graduating in 1935. I know that my dad's Aunt Eleonora was quite the society "maven" in the New Orleans Garden District. Mention is made of her in one of Truman Capote's books. So there you have it (whether you wanted it or not!) - just about everything I know about dad's family. If I just knew what their surname was, origionally. I thought modica was the topping we put on our pasta on St. Joseph's Day! There were a lot of great stories about life in Sicily - the olive oil they made - the wine casks in the basement. The food!
